my input

For the concept, I thought about games and how they already use math to implement stuff for example if the player hits an enemy the enemy’s health will go down. But there are valuables behind the attack and the health bar. If you don’t hide the values you already have a bit of a math game.

In the game, you must calculate math sums to do damage to the monster but the harder the math the more damage you do to the monster. The game is turned based and I decided how much damage you should give to the enemy and how hard the enemy should hit you.

Design

For the design, we had to make a lot of calculations to make the game interesting for people that are good or bath in math. Together with Erik (other game designers), we made a couple of paper prototypes to test with other people that we’re active by the game jam. Some were even elementary and high school teachers so they were excellent people to test the prototype on. In the test, players could choose between 4 different kinds of math equations each a bit harder than the other. But the harder ones give you bonus points. then they get to see 4 different answers where they have to solve it in a small amount of time.

An element that I decided on was to have different kinds of weapons for the game. Players could choose between a shield, a bow, and a sword. Each weapon has different effects. Shield gives the player 50% extra defense and 20+ attacks so that a player can take longer to defeat the monster. The bow gives the player a 40+ attack so that he can defeat the enemy faster by finishing easier questions. The sword doubles the attack so that the player can take an enemy down fast if he’s finishing harder math sums.
